I’ve seen a total contrast of verdicts on Ethan Ampadu on social media over the last couple of weeks.
After a few poor performances on loan with Sheffield United, I’ve seen many claiming that he will never be good enough for Chelsea. Then just last night, after a fine performance from Amapdu at centre back in their 1-0 win over Newcastle, he is suddenly he is touted as a ‘successor to Thiago Silva.’
Which players could be leaving Chelsea this month? Find out here!
Which he might actually be by the way, I’m not disagreeing. But my point here is, Chelsea fans must show balance and patience when looking at the Ampadu situation.
He has been playing in two different positions all season between centre back and defensive midfielder, and has been unable to gain momentum or consistency in one particular position, which has stumped his development a little in my opinion.
He needs to play and perfect one position, and perhaps this is going to be at centre back. But for him to push on now and prove his worth for Chelsea, I hope that United keep picking him at centre back for the rest of the season so he can own that position.
Whether he then gets a chance at Chelsea or not is another question. But with contracts closing in on Antonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen, as well as Fikayo Tomori’s Chelsea career looking up in the air – there is at least three new centre back positions Chelsea will need to fill in the next year or two.
Ampadu has always had excellent natural technical talent, and is strong in the tackle. He reads the game very well, and plays with confidence and maturity.
He has EVERY chance of making it at Chelsea, just as long as he is now allowed to perfect one position.
